Key features

  • 5Ω Points Ignition Coil, Replaces 31609-65A / 31609-72A Direct aftermarket coil for 1965-1984 Harley-Davidson motorcycles with mechanical points and condenser ignition. Replaces 31609-65A, 31609-72A, 31609-73A. 5Ω primary resistance, 12V, 2-wire (positive + ground to frame), oil-filled canister, black finish. Match your old coil stamp 31609-65A and confirm 5Ω + points system before ordering. Not for 3Ω single-fire electronic ignitions (53-434), not for 6V pre-1965 models, not a dual-fire coil.
  • For Harley Big Twin & Sportster with Points (1965-1984) Engineered for Shovelhead, Panhead, Ironhead engines: FLH Electra Glide, FX Super Glide, FXE, FXR, FXS Low Rider, FXWG Wide Glide, FLT Tour Glide (Big Twin) and XLH 1000, XLCH, XLCR, XLS Roadster (Sportster).
  • Fixes Weak Spark, Misfire & Hard Starting on Vintage Harleys Resolves points-era symptoms: cranks but no fire, weak orange spark at plug, backfire through carb, or dies after 20 minutes of riding (condenser failure + weak coil). New winding restores 15-18kV secondary off the points/condenser. Ohm-test old coil: 5Ω ±10% = good; open or <1Ω = shorted. Replace coil and condenser together for best results.
  • Drop-In to Factory Coil Bracket, 15 Minutes Disconnect battery ground. Remove 2× 1/4" mount bolts from the coil bracket (frame-mounted on most Big Twins, under seat on Sportsters). Unplug 2 wires (positive from ignition switch, negative to points/condenser). Lift old coil out. Seat new coil, torque bolts to 35 in-lb. Reconnect: positive (green/yellow stripe) to + terminal, negative (black) to - terminal going to the points plate. Reuse existing spark plug wires if resistance is under 5kΩ/ft.
  • 5Ω Points ≠ 3Ω Electronic — Check Your Ignition System Critical: This coil is 5Ω for mechanical points/condenser ONLY. If your bike has been converted to electronic ignition (Dyna S, Crane HI-4, etc.), you need a 3Ω single-fire coil (53-434) — this 5Ω will overheat the electronic module. Also confirm 12V system — some 1965-and-earlier bikes are 6V (require different coil). If your bike has a points plate behind the timer cover and a condenser, this 5Ω coil is correct.
